The study of cardiac involvement and some parameters for investigating CV risk factors in obese school children

Objective: Pediatric obesity is a major cardiovascu-lar (CV) risk factor that requires effective measures to prevent CV risk even from childhood.The obese child most often shows signs of CV involvement indepen-dent of other comorbidities associated with obesity. The purpose of the paper. The study of CV dysfunction induced by obesity and the value and utility of some parameters to investigate the main CV risk factors in obese children

Methods: Patients: 55 obese children (7-16 years) and a control group of 15 children, healthy subjects (similar age), normoponderal, with no history of CV diseases that were investigated by clinical examination, ECG, Doppler echocardiography (echo), the study of some markers for CV risk factors induced by obesity Results: Clinical:body mass index(BMI) values: pa-tients: 30-38, vs. <25 in control group; ECG: aspects corresponding to age, without significant changes; echo: left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) (69% pts), diastolic dysfunction of LV,with the normal LV ejecti-on fraction and decreasing the LV shortening fraction (38% pts); biochemical para-meters: levels for plasma homocysteine (Hcy) (49% cases), correlated with BMI and systemic hyperrtension (9): Hcy average value: pa-tients=8.95 ± 1.96 μmol/l vs. 6.1 ± 2.4 μmol/l (control group); dyslipidemia (59% patients); high sensitive CRP(hsCRP) average values (mg%): patients=0.63 ± 1.09 vs. 0.05 ± 0.18 (control group); elevated values of carotid intima-media thickness (c-IMT) (48% pts): c-IMTaverage value: patients=0.72 mm vs. 0.39 mm (control group);

Conclusions: Cardiological investigation is necessary for all obese school children to highlight of CV dys-function and and concomitantly a assesment of the pa-rameters for investigation of CV risk factors induced by obesity in order to quickly establish effective measures to prevent CV risk even from childhood
