Introduction: Abnormal liver function tests as the passive congestion of the liver are prevalent in patients with acute decompensated heart failure. Th e aim of the study was to estimate the prevalence of liver diseases in hospitalized male patients with acute decompensated heart failure. Methods: A retrospective study of medical records of 47 male patients with acute decompensated heart failure consecutively admitted in the intensive care unit of internal medicine department of an emergency hospital, during a period of 3 months (January – April 2014). In all patients clinical exam, laboratory tests, ECG, chest X-Ray, transthoracic echocardiography, abdominal and thyroid ultrasonography were performed in the fi rst 24 hours of admission. Results: Th e mean age was 69.93 years (43 to 89 years). Abnormal liver function tests were found for total serum bilirubin (10.63%), ALT (17.02%), AST (19.14%), alkaline phosphatase (6.38%), serum albumine (8.51%), prothrombine time (4.25%). Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) was the most prevalent comorbidity in acute decompensated heart failure patients (59.57%), followed by liver function abnormality (23.40%), hepatic cirrhosis (4.25%), liver metastasis (4.25%), hepatitis B (2.12%), hepatitis C (2.12%), hepatic carcinoma (2.12%), Budd-Chiari syndrome (2.12%), hepatic hemangioma (2.12%), hepatopulmonary syndrome (2.12%). Conclusions: NAFLD is the most prevalent liver disease in patients with acute decompensated heart failure, followed by abnormal liver function tests.
