Introduction: The objective of this study is to assess the diagnostic yield of the handheld ecocardiographical (HHE) examination for the cardiac assessment of patients undergoing chemo-or radiotherapy. Methods: Left atrial (LA) size, valvular abnormalities (VA), left ventricular dilatation (LVD) and presence of pericardial eff usion (PE) were assessed using a severity score in patients referred prior of chemo- or radiotherapy procedures. They were scanned using a HHE (V scan, GE) by a trained junior cardiologist and independently by a trained cardiologist on a standard echo machine (SEM, Aloka) in a blinded fashion. The degree of agreement was assessed by kappa correlation Results: Out of the 36 consecutive patients included over a 1-month period, 1 patient had cardiac tamponade immediately seen on the HHE. We found a very good correlation between HHE and SEM for LA size, LVD and PE (kappa>0.8) and a moderate correlation for VA (kappa>0,5). The mean time from the referral to the examination was significantly shorter for HHE. Conclusions: In oncologic patients referred for cardiac assessment, the screening with a HHE is helpful in the prompt evaluation of cardiac chamber size and pericardial effusions.
