Introduction: Among the most important cardiovascular risk factors that have significant impact on arterial stiffness are high blood pressure and age. Among other risk factors, one of the most important is diabetes mellitus, while the roles of dyslipidemia and smoking are unclear. Objective: To point the inter-individual variability with age conducted at the construct of frailty—the idea that people of similar ages have varying degrees of vulnerability to adverse outcomes. We examined whether cardiovascular disease, metabolic conditions and generalized atherosclerosis, as refl ected by aortic pulse wave velocity (PWao), augmentation index (Aixao) and diabetes, have impact on physical frailty at functioning elderly. Methods: We conducted an observational study, over 9 months, on a total of 143 patients, 78 % females and 22% males, mean age 72.85 ± 10.07 years. We observed demographic data such as age, smoking status, and origin, biologic markers as LDL, HDL, metabolic syndrome and frailty by Fried’s criteria. Their arterial status assessed by measuring arterial pulse wave velocity (PWV), augmentation index (Aixao) and Systolic blood pressure aortic (SBPao) with an oscillometric device (Arteriograph, TensioMed Ltd.). Results: We reported an increased incidence of metabolic syndrome among elderly (78%), with a significant increase of frailty in this group. Correlation of the PWVao was positive with the increased LDL (p = 0.059). Aortic PWV positively correlated with age (r = 0.65, p < 0.001) and frailty(r = 0.31, p = 0.002). Mean systolic blood was high 151.5 ± 14.8 mm Hg and heart rate 67.195 ± 9.807. The PWVao was not correlated with metabolic syndrome at elderly. Conclusions: The early identification of arterial stiffness represents an important therapeutic target in preventing the atherosclerotic process, allowing the choice of the best therapeutic strategies for improving the cardiovascular prognosis.
