A shift of perspective: medical education as a risk factor

Introduction: Suicide among students in medical fa-culties is an issue that generates victims globally, being a phenomenon with a totally unquantified scale.
Methods: Existing studies focused on this subject have been analyzed to try the outline of common elements, along with global programs that try to combat the ne-gative effects faced by students.
Results: Suicide is present with a higher rate among medical students compared to students from other fa-culties, with depression being present in elevated per-centages of students and residents, increasing as the advances in years of study.
Conclusions: Although the topics addressed are ge-nerally avoided due to the emotional load they carry, the only viable solution to reduce the number of people affected by depression and suicide is to create programs focused on monitoring and improving mental health.
