70 cases with ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm in the vascular surgery section during eight years (2005-2012)

Background: Ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm represents a life threatening condition imposing prompt diagnostic and surgical treatment. Th e Institute for Cardiovascular Diseases “Prof. dr. C. C. Iliescu” is assigned as “for emergencies” in December 2008. Objectives: We present the distribution of the number of cases with the diagnosis ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm from the Vascular surgery section in this Institute per years, four years before and four years aft er this date. Material and methods: Retrospective study of the discharged patients during eight years. Results: 70 cases from the 1st of January 2005 through the 31st of December 2012 are distributed as following: one case/2005 (1.43%), one case/2006, 6 cases/2007 (8.57%), 6 cases/2008, 7 cases/2009 (10%), 12 cases/2010 (17.14%), 13 cases/2011 (18.57%) and 24 cases/2012 (34.29%). Conclusions: The number of cases per year is continuously increasing in this study; it is 24 times greater in the last year as compared with the first one. These findings correlate with the change of the profile of the Institute.
